IT is often seen as the 'Ugly Stepchild'
 Huw Thomas, COO of PMC maintains that IT is often seen as the 'Ugly Stepchild' of many retail operations. Yet its reach and responsibility spans the entire business. Everyone wants to engage with the IT Director when a service is not available or not performing well enough!
Thomas states: "In an ideal world the IT team should be represented across all departments of the business. IT should attend senior management meetings and be part of their business performance reviews. If you want to improve a critical service, how can you expect IT to really deliver a great solution if they don't understand in detail how your business processes work and what your strategy is?"
"More importantly IT needs to be treated as a true peer to the other key business units and should be represented directly at Board meetings. Businesses depend on technology, that's why it's essential that the IT director (or CIO) sits on the board. Without IT you cannot run a retail business - you cannot order stock, take sales or pay your bills. Neither can you afford to delegate responsibility for such business-critical roles to anyone other than a board member."

Testing should not be seen as policing. It’s a positive addition to the process, the problem is that neither vendors nor retailers have the bandwidth or skill set to test systems adequately or emulate the retailer’s live environments.
