PMC India sponsors Akshar Trust for Hearing Impaired children

PMC India sponsors Akshar Trust for Hearing Impaired childrenAbingdon, Oxfordshire, UK - - 25 November 2008 - - Retail systems specialist PMC Limited has today announced that its India-based offshore development subsidiary, PMC India (PMC-I), will support the Akshar Trust, in Vadodara, India www.baroda.com/NGO/Akshar.html in its work to help hearing impaired children.

Without the Akshar Trust, such children would never learn to communicate, orally or in writing, they would never receive an education or hope to get a job. Worse still, they are isolated from society and their families. The Akshar Trust not only helps children but also has a teacher training programme to develop the necessary specialised teaching skills.

Paul Mason, CEO, PMC states: “I believe that being a responsible company means supporting the communities in which we operate. In the UK, PMC supports Adoption UK. Our colleagues in PMC-I share the UK team’s commitment to support the community local to our office in Vadodara.”

Nisha Grover, Honorary Principal, Akshar Trust comments: “It is valuable for the school to be associated with PMC as the role of technology in teaching the hearing impaired is rapidly increasing. There are many ideas we have which involve using this technology in the classroom.”

Mason continues: “The school works under enormous constraints. They have limited access to IT and specialised hearing equipment needed to help the children learn. To develop literacy skills the school ‘adapts’ Gujarati textbooks from the Gujarat Board for use in the classrooms. This material is photocopied so each child has their own copy of the text. Worksheets related to the text are also created. For the younger children the worksheets are used to develop reading and writing skills.”

Despite the constraints, the children are dedicated, disciplined and intelligent – just trapped by their disability. The school produces wonderful results; many children pass mainstream education board exams and some attend university, some have finished their M.Com and have gained employment. The school also encourages parents to acquire the skills and information they need to support their children at home.

Mason closes: “I am delighted that our PMC-I colleagues have decided to support the Akshar Trust. The school principal’s ambition is to create a purpose-built school. The local Government has granted some waste land on the outskirts of the city for the project. However, it may take some time to raise all the money required to build it! If ever there was a need for sponsorship that counts this is it.”

“With a project of this scale to be delivered within such an aggressive timescale, getting the right skills and expertise on board quickly was essential. We mobilised a team around a large number of BrightHouse personnel and then went outside the organisation to find the skills we lacked. PMC provided a crucial skill we needed – they are experts, and gave us a real focus on testing – and they played a key role in helping us achieve our goals.” Simon Mouncer, Head of Business Change and IT at BrightHouse.
