Every retailer will at some time need project management skills. However, to be effective requires more than the ability to read a Gantt chart. Effective retail project management demands detailed retail knowledge and understanding to really drive a project plan and manage the issues, risks and dependencies.
Project management must engage with both IT and the business. PMC project managers have all run retail projects, can work with IT and the business, and communicate with both.
Governance is another critical area - reporting, risks and issues - the basic parts of running a project. That requires proven experience, a sound methodology, and consultants that understand the retail context, with the skill to manage the governance between IT, the business and any third parties.
